Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier - Terrier Group

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has four varieties. Traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English and American. They are a breed that is less likely to give you allergies. Their coat sheds very little hair. They were originally bred for hunting vermin, herding livestock, guarding and watching the family and livestock. Today this breed is basically a playful companion and a great friend. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has been cross bred with Standard Poodles to form a Woodle. It has also been cross bred with Beagles to form a Wheagle. Wheatens are great with cats as long as they have been well socialized with them as puppies. They are great with other dogs as well as children. They make a great watch dog however may be less of a guard dog due to their even temperament. The Wheaten Terrier is a dog that needs to be handled with care and treated properly or aggression and fear could occur in its behavior. Adequate exercise is needed but too much exercise in the heat should be avoided. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier puppies have a red, brown, mahogany or white coat. The muzzle or ears of the puppies may be black or dark brown. As they grow older the coat will then change from dark to white and then wheaten in color. Thus the name the Wheaten (wheat colored ) Terrier. The coat as an adult may have darker colored hair in it. If the dog has a skin disease as an adult the resulting hair growth will remain the same as the puppy coat until growing into the wheaten color. The size is from 18 -20 inches at the withers and about 45 lbs. This is a versatile dog that should get along with every possible part of your life (children, strangers, friends, cats, dogs).
