Shiba Inu - Non-Sporting Group
Originating in Japan the Shiba Inu resembles the Akita another Japanese dog. Bred to hunt and expose small game. The Shiba Inu is a dog that is at times independent. They are confident, aware and territorial. At times they may not be trusting of other dogs as well as strangers. Their striking red coats are well adapted and camouflage in the Japanese red brushwood trees where they hunted. The coat is short to a medium length and needs a good combing twice a week. Weighing 17-23 lbs and standing 13-16 inches at the shoulder they are in need of long walks or playing each day. Coming in the colors of red, red sesame or black and tan all with a creamy white shading. These dogs were almost extincted after World War II. When worked and maintained with good care they are more likely to be obedient. Training should be done early and often as they may be stubborn.
