Shetland Sheepdog - Herding Group

Originating in the Scottish Isles of Shetland, the Shetland Sheepdog was bred for herding sheep. They are one of the smarter breeds thus making them easy to train. Their energy levels are high as they love to play and run. This dog breed is good with other dogs however at times may not be accepting of strangers. Devoted to their family, they should be calm and relaxed in their presence. Their coat is coarse and long and is colored in black and blue merle with white or light brown. Exercise should be done for about an hour a day in the form of a walk or run. Grooming needs to be done three times a week to maintain their long coat. As one of the herding breeds, they are not for everyone. Those seeking a companion dog may find themselves with a working breed that's instinct is to herd. Standing about 15 inches at the shoulder and weighing about 20 lbs. They are a smaller breed and built for speed and to herd. They look like the Collie and share the same country of origin and sheep herding abilities.
