Scottish Deerhound - Hound Group
The Scottish Deerhound as the name implies originated in Scotland. Thought of as a gentle giant and a relaxed breed. This dog is rather large standing 28-32 inches at the shoulder and weighing 75-110 lbs. The coat is wiry and of medium length. It can be colored in gray, gray and brindle, dark-blue gray as well as yellow, red and fawn. Capable of hunting deer in the Scotland Highlands. This dog breed is fast and strong and a true hunting hound. Today they are mainly used as a companion dog or best friend. Personality qualities such as sensitive, easy going, loyal and laid back make this dog a lovable canine. They are tolerant of other dogs and small animals though at times may chase them. Their energy levels are not too high for a large dog. In general they are somewhat of a challenge to train, at times independent and more of a relaxed dog than an excited dog. Exercise should be done for an hour a day to allow this breed to run which it loves to do.
