Rottweiler - Working Group

The Rottweiler is a German dog breed that was called the "Butcher". It was nicknamed this because it used to pull carts with meat that had been butchered. They also were used as herding dogs and possibly hunting however their prey drive surprisingly is not too high. Its main use today is a guide dog, search / rescue dog and a guard dog. Built to guard a Rottweiler may grow upwards of over 150 lbs. The breed standard is 100-130 lbs and from 22-28 inches at the shoulder males being heavier and taller than females. It is the oldest herding breed and for such a dominant stereotyped dog is quite adaptable to other animals with the proper training and discipline. Its name is part of the German town Rottweil where it originated from. Herding in the Roman legion was an ancient purpose of the Rottweiler where it could have been with the Italian Mastiff as both were used in Roman times. Black and tan or black and mahogany are the main stand out colors that this dog breed is known for. The Rottweiler is a muscular breed from head to toe and requires adequate exercise to maintain a healthy figure. Owning a loyal intelligent breed like this requires trust and discipline. Though labeled as an attack dog when placed in the proper environment this dog likes to work and is obedient. For the right owner this dog is surprisingly smart and a great friend. If you leave the physical barrier of this dog behind, surely you will be impressed with some Rottie love.
