Pekingese - Toy Group

Originating in China the Pekingese bear the look of a lion. They are known as "Lion Dogs". For a small dog they are similar to working breeds though not nearly as large. The Pekingese is ever aware, independent and lion hearted. They are more of a guard than a lap dog which may be a surprise due to their size. Their coat has two layers a hard overcoat and soft undercoat. It can be found in any color. Standing from 5-8 inches at the shoulder and weighing a maximum of 13 lbs. The Pekingese is a dog that was in Buddhist existence which gives them religious history. Their mindset is independent as well as loyal. In other words they are attached to their family but they are also able to do their own thing. Independent dogs always need to be trained strictly to understand that their owner is in charge. In hot weather they should be well hydrated because their coat has insulation for cold weather. Their face is almost bulldog like or brachycephalic (compacted) which means that it needs cleaning often.
