Mastiff - Working Group
Originating in England, the Mastiff comes from the Roman Empire. Ceasar used these dog's as gladiators, guardians and war dogs. They were used for fighting as well as bull and bear baiting. When these practices became outlawed the Mastiff was used and is intended to be a guardian. Their coat is short and colored in fawn, apricot and brindle all with a dark snout, ears and nose. Known to be a gentle, relaxed giant. The Mastiff is loyal and protective though it is less inclined to be wary. They require minimal exercise and a good play session each day. This dog breed may be hard to train however they carry the same intelligence as most indepencent working dogs. The Mastiff weighs from 175-190 lbs and stands from 27-30 inches though it may be much heavier and taller. For the experienced dog owner the Mastiff should not be a challenge. They may be lazy and too large for children. However, with the right obedience these dogs can make great family dogs and friends.
