Kerry Blue Terrier - Terrier Group

Originating in Ireland, the Kerry Blue Terrier is a dog that was bred to work on the farm. Perhaps the most versatile of all the terriers or almost any other breed. The Kerry Blue Terrier has been used to herd, rat, protect livestock, retrieve on land and water and hunt. Standing 18-20 inches and weighing 35-40 lbs this breed is one of the larger terriers. The coat is of medium length and has a soft plush wiry texture. It needs grooming bi-weekly and clipping about once a month. The Kerry Blue Terrier is a dog that loves to remain active whether it be in the outdoors for a walk or a hunt. They are a dog that is versatile and tough enough to work with police. Like many of the terriers they may be independent and stubborn. They are not usually ever accepting of other animals and in general are more of a worker than companion. However, they are highly loyal and able to guard. Socialization should be done early to rid them of their faults which may be aggression. Their signature blue coat may also have darker blue or gray hues to it. This breed needs to remain active and is so versatile that training it must be done frequently. It is almost certain that without the proper training and exercise that you will find yourself having a hard time controlling this breed.
