Irish Terrier - Terrier Group

Originating in Ireland, the Irish Terrier is a dog that was bred for hunting vermin such as otter and rats. Their coat is wiry and of medium length. It can be colored in red, red with light brown or light brown. Grooming should be done bi-weekly and clipping should be done three times a year. The Irish Terrier is a dog that is loyal, curious, fearless, courageous and loveable. They are active outdoors and need a daily walk or play session. Their stubborn attitude may make them difficult to train. They are apt to be aggressive towards other dogs and aloof with strangers. The Irish Terrier is independent at times and always alert. Their instinct to hunt may take them off into their own little world. Patience and persistence are needed to control this breed. Their history includes being a messenger in WWI. They are not the most popular terrier in fact they may be one of the rarest. This terrier like most is capable of being obedient or aggressive depending on it's socialization and obedience regiment. They stand about 18 inches and weigh from 25-28 lbs.
