Harrier - Hound Group
Originating in England, the Harrier was bred to hunt rabbit. They are happy go lucky, loyal and have a high prey drive. This dog breed loves to be with people and should be calm around children and strangers. Their noses can track a scent and stay on a scent for miles. Like most hounds, at times the Harrier may be independent and hunting driven. They bay instead of bark like the Beagle and American Foxhound. Exercise needs to be done for about an hour a day as this breed likes to be active. In general they may be difficult to train but with early obedience they should comply to their owner. Standing about 20 inches at the shoulder and weighing from 40-55 lbs. they are dog that is built to track. In general they are friendly and a good choice for those who have patience and an ability to control a dog that loves to track. The Harrier may not be one of the most popular dogs however it is a great asset to any hunter or a family that enjoys a graceful dog.
