Great Pyrenees - Working Group

Known also as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, this snow colored giant was intended to guard flocks of sheep. Alert and ever content, the Great Pyrenees is an instinctual guard. They are well adapted to the cold and were bred to live in mountain terrain. Their name is derived from the area in which they originated from. The Pyrenees mountains in Europe. Through the years some have been selectively bred to be companions however their family loyalty and dedication yields a wary predicament. Weighing from 121-165 lbs and standing 26-32 inches at the shoulder the Great Pyrenees is a large dog. This dog breed is colored in white with shades of gray, pale yellow or orange. Weekly grooming is needed to maintain their long strong coat. Prone to heat exhaustion due to their long coat. The Great Pyrenees needs to be well hydrated in the summer months. They are best suited for a large area to exercise in and not city life. The sheer size of this dog makes it difficult to handle as well as too big for children to be around without supervision.
