Chinese Shar-Pei - Non-Sporting Group

Possibly existing for a few thousand years and mainly used to guard and hunt. One may not know that these dog's were also used to fight. Cute and cuddly looking, the Shar Pei has a dominant and firm side. Owning this type of dog takes lots of gentle love as well as a dominant owner. Similar to the fate's of other war era dogs. The breed was in danger of almost not existing during the height of the Chinese communist regime. This dog was used as a stuffed animal as the dog "Wrinkles". It's soft plush wrinkled skin has gained it popularity in the United States while abroad it is well known for it's rough skin. Shar Pei means "sand coat" in Chinese. Found in the beautiful colors of black, gray, blue, red/tan and gold. He is a medium sized dog standing 18-20 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 45-60 lbs. They like to remain active and need daily grooming due to the wrinkles in their coat. With wrinkled skin the Chinese Shar Pei was able to slip the bite of another dog in the dog fighting pit.
