Boxer - Working Group

The Boxer, one of the most popular and tough looking dogs originates from Germany. A little known fact about the Boxer is that there are three different types. English, American and German being the largest of the boxers. The stocky body and muscular head are both ideal for catching and bringing down game. Boxers were originally bred to hunt wild boar or taller prey such as deer. The boxing like posture this dog is known for matches its name. The coat is smooth, shiny and short. It is colored in fawn or brindle (tiger like stripes of black and fawn). The fawn colors are yellow, mahogany, reddish tan or honey-blonde. The face of the Boxer is similar to that of a Bulldog which it was bred from. It is called brachycephalic (a short compact muzzle). The Boxer is one of the smallest of the mastiff group. They need adequate exercise and lots of attention since it is a high energy dog breed. This breed is also built to guard and hunt so it may have a tendency to be focused on smaller animals or other dogs. In general it is a good family dog if trained properly. Their short muzzle can cause breathing problems in the heat but other than that they are not prone to too many health problems. Owning this dog requires great patience and focus to control this dominant breed. The Boxer is a sweetheart and will be your best friend with the proper care. They stand from 20-24 inches at the shoulder and weigh 55-65 lbs.
