Bloodhound - Hound Group
The Bloodhound originates from Belgium. Standing 22-27 inches at the shoulder and weighing from 66-110 lbs. The Bloodhound is an imposing and gentle looking dog that needs little grooming and adequate exercise. It's main use today is tracking people through scent. These dogs have a black and tan coat as well as a red and tan coat. They descended from packs of hounds belonging to St. Hubert, patron saint of hunters. Each year six of these dogs were sent to the king of France for royal packs centuries ago. Their name is derived from their ability to catch the smell of blood. Another reason for their name is that they are of "pure" blood with nobility. The Bloodhound needs to be watched around small children because they may knock them over. This dog breed is so focused on scent that it may be hard to train. They are also most prone to cancer, bloat and joint problems due to their size. In general they are an affectionate family orientated breed.
