Black Russian Terrier - Working Group

Originating in the former Soviet Union the Black Russian Terrier is intended to be a military dog. This means it can guard, rescue and detect things such as explosives. They are mainly colored in black or black with a few gray hairs. They stand 26-30 inches and weigh from 80-145 lbs. They have confidence and courage to back up their serious Schnauzer like looks. The Black Russian Terrier may be tentative around strangers and dominant dogs. On the other side, they are protective of their family and usually good with small pets or small dogs. In general they require a good walk each day and lot's of love. Their coarse coat needs to be combed twice a week and scissored about every two months. Being highly affectionate and relatively easy to train makes this dog a favorite for serious dog owners. They are a great working breed that has done everything from pulling sleds to transporting military supplies. One may say that this is the Russian form of the German Shepherd.
