Bernese Mountain Dog - Working Group
The Bernese Mountain Dog is the largest of the Swiss mountain dog's. It is also the only one that sport's a long coat. Used to pull carts and to drive cattle. It will also protect cattle and it's family. The tricolored coat is in need of regular grooming. This dog stands 23-28 inches at the shoulder and weighs from 85-100 lbs. It's history is ancient, dating back to Roman mastiffs. At one point foreign dogs brought into Switzerland had threatened the breed. Surprisingly agile, the Swiss Mountain Dog will excel in obedience trials. They are a great companion however their size could pose problems for children. As with all large dogs and especially those used to herd and guard. Early obedience and rigorous training is needed in order to proclaim the owner as the one in charge. Docile and agile for a large dog makes this a breed that will keep you occupied.
