Australian Shepherd - Herding Group
The Australian Shepherd is an active dog that loves to work. This dog breed is involved in obedience, utility, flyball and rescuing. Their coat is medium and colored in black tricolor, red merle, blue merle brown with tan points and white. Ample exercise is needed to hinder the dog from being to overactive. Grooming should be done twice a week. Owning a true herding breed such as the Australian Shepherd means that you should expect your "Aussie" to want to work. Patient training and the ability to remain active is a true trait that the owner needs with this breed. The Australian Shepherd stands about 18-22 inches tall and weighs between 40-50 lbs. Welcoming it's family is a given however the guard instinct which comes with it's herding instinct is still innate. It's breed origins are up for debate as the "Aussie" was also called the California Shepherd.
